Seminar participants of “China-Latin America and Caribbean Region Legal Professionals Exchange Program” Held at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Visited Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court

On the morning of May 24, 2019, participants of the seminar “China-Latin America and Caribbean Region Legal Professionals Exchange Program” held at the Law School of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics visited Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court. The project is sponsored by the China Law Society and hosted by Shanghai Law Society and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, which aims to implement the China - Latin American and Caribbean Countries Cooperation Plan (2015 - 2019) and promote the spirit of the Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, strengthen exchanges and cooperation between China and legal communities of Latin American and Caribbean countries, and to promote high-quality co-construction of the Belt and Road initiative. Associate Professor Xu Key as the Assistant Dean, and Ms. Li Rui as the Director of the Experimental and Practical Teaching Center accompanied the visit.

The course consisted of nearly 20 judicial officials, law professors and lawyers from 15 countries, including Argentina, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominica, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Peru, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. Huang Xiangqing as the President of Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, leading officials of relevant functional departments of the Court, and relevant personnel from China Law Society and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics attended the symposium.

Before the symposium, the chair Huang Xiangqing accompanied the participants of the seminar to visit the Legal Culture Gallery of Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, and introduced some history of legal development in China and foreign countries, guided them to visit diverse trial courts and tribunals, and elaborated on adjudication procedures. As the symposium started, Huang Xiangqing expressed a warm welcome to the participants of the seminar and introduced the basic situation of Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court to the guests. Chang Chengyang, Chief Judge of the Commercial Affairs Court, introduced the general situation of court system and civil procedure system in China. Jin Hui, director of the Information Management Center, introduced in details the application of information technology in the court.

 

Members of the seminar expressed considerable interest in these introduction and asked questions about the people’s jury system in China, the application of guiding cases in trial practice, the characteristics of litigation and arbitration, professional requirements or judges, and the role of introducing information technology in promoting the quality of trials. Afterwards, the judges of Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court answered all those questions raised by attendees. Members of the seminar commended the accomplishments of Chinese court system in terms of promoting judicial openness, improving trial quality and guaranteeing fair trials.

The symposium was successfully concluded after going through a series of enthusiastic discussions.
